A REPORT ON THE KUHIS-KUGISS 2ND NATIONAL INTER-TERTIARY CONGRESS
2006
The
2nd National Inter-Tertiary Congress of Kumasi High School and
Kumasi Girls’ Secondary School Old Students Association
which took place from 2nd – 5th March 2006 was held at
the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)
on the theme: DISCIPLINE, A TOOL FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.
Thursday, the 2nd of March, 2006, Mmerantee-Ahemaa, Legon
Branch departed from campus around 2:00 pm for KNUST campus,
Kumasi in a 46 sweater bus with an air condition and video.
By God’s grace we arrived at KNUST around 6:30 pm and
were warmly welcomed by the executives and members of the sister
institution at INDEPENDENCE Dinning Hall. Arrangements for
accommodation then followed after the reception.
The following morning, Friday, 3rd March, we went to our Alma
Mata (Kumasi High School) for a clean up exercise and Sports
activities. The original arrangement was to go to both KUHIS
and KUGISS but due to circumstances beyond our control, we
could not go to KUGISS. Nevertheless, some of the Ahemaa decided
to visit their school.
On arrival at the KUHIS campus, we were warmly welcomed by
the new headmaster, Mr. M. O. Yeboah (Sagita), some staff members
and some of the students though they were on mid-term holidays,
which had become necessary due to a general clean-up exercise
organized by KMA to beautify the Kumasi metropolis towards
the 49th Independence Day celebration.. In his welcome address,
the headmaster explained some of his policies for the school
on disciplinary grounds, development projects and others. He
therefore took the opportunity to advise us to maintain discipline
and academic excellence in our various institutions. The clean
up exercise then followed. We cleaned around the classroom
blocks and the main streets of the school. We were served with
Kenkey and pepper after the clean up. The sports activities
came to an end around 3pm. We advised the students who were
around (mainly Form 3 students). We bid farewell and departed.
In the evening, a Jama competition was organized by Queens
Hall as part of their week celebration. It was a night of ecstasy
when old jama songs of KUHIS were recollected and sung at the
function.
Saturday, 4th March was the main Congress day which was held
at the Unity Dining Hall. Due to a Clean-up exercise undertaken
by KMA in the whole metropolis, the meeting started around
12:30 pm though the original time schedule was 8:30 am. Members
and invited guest arrived and the congress started.
The chairman of the occasion was Dr. F. A. Yeboah, an Abrantie
at the KNUST Medical School. He talked about discipline among
students and encouraged us to live a positive life for a better
future.
Also present at the function were Mr. M. O. Yeboah, headmaster
(KUHIS), Mr. Henry Kwarteng (T’ Oyo), Mr. Joseph Adomako
Frimpong and Mrs. Veronica Tandoh, all of Kumasi High School.
Unfortunately, there was no staff from Kumasi Girls’ School.
They added their word on the topic: DISCIPLINE, A TOOL FOR
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. Refreshment followed to end the first
part of the congress.
In the second part, students were divided into groups to discuss
on how old students of the two schools (KUHIS-KUGISS) can help
raise the image of both schools. Some of the suggestions were:
a measure to improve discipline and academic excellence of
schools, speech and prize giving day to reward outstanding
students. This will encourage them to study hard and for others
to emulate.
A national account is to be opened to raise funds to buy books
and other items to be donated to both schools. The name of
the fund is “KAE WONKYI FUND” literally meaning “Remember
where you came from.” A national executive was elected
to monitor the fund and also see to the organization of subsequent
congress. A closing prayer was said for the meeting to come
to an end.
In the evening, a dinner was organized at the Engineering
Guest House at KNUST campus. It started around 7:30 pm and
ended at approximately 10 pm. There was a group photograph
by the various institutions.
Sunday, 5th March was supposed to be a Thanksgiving Service
to be held at KUHIS campus but due to the mid-term holidays,
it could not come on. Members then departed to their various
institutions thus, bringing the congress to an end.
